GLC PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT
At beaches around the US, the public is notified about bacterial pollution today because of the results of water samples collected yesterday. By the time the results of yesterday’s tests are complete, the water quality has changed. Chicago is unique, and the Chicago Park District has partnered with researchers at the UIC School of Public Health, who perform DNA-based tests for bacteria. Those results are ready within 3-4 hours, instead the 18-24 hours required for standard culture tests.
- In the summer of 2015, UIC tested water from 5 beaches per day, 4 days per beach. In the 2016, UIC is testing water from 9 beaches, 5 days per week.
- UIC is proud to support the Chicago Park District’s effort to keep the public informed
- at beaches and via social media
- about current health risks.
